"DRAGON GATE"
Custom Built Glass Aquarium
Exhibited at Victorian Collage of the Arts Graduate Show
2013
According to Chinese mythology, the' Dragon Gate' is located at the top of a waterfall cascading from a legendary mountain. Many carp swim upstream against the river's strong current, but few are capable or brave enough for the final leap over the waterfall. If a carp successfully makes the jump, it is transformed into a powerful dragon.
Dragon Gate is an artist-made, glass aquarium that consists of two rectangular tanks interconnected by a Glass Corridor. Once a fish passes from the first tank through to the second tank, it can then ascend up the third bottomless aquarium, atop which is a functioning tranquil water fountain. All three tanks feature hand-drawn designs depicting the metamorphosis from Kio to Dragon. The images are etched and sandblasted on the exterior of the glass creating a permanent frosted look.
